Identification vs. discrimination training: Learning effects for trained and untrained sounds

چکیده
This paper presents the results of two high variability phonetic training regimes aimed at improving the perception of five English vowels, namely /æ, ʌ, ɪ, i, ɜː/ by Spanish/Catalan speakers learning English as a second language (L2). 60 learners of English as an L2 took part in a pretest/training/post-test study and were assigned to one of two training methods (forced-choice identification training, AX discrimination training) and a control group. Vowel training was administered with CVC nonsense words. Preand post-tests involved consonant and vowel identification of nonsense words and generalization to real words. Results indicate that both trained groups significantly outperformed the controls on the trained sounds, showing a positive effect of both training regimes. Identification trainees improved to a greater extent than discrimination trainees on the perception of trained segments. However, a tendency towards improvement with the untrained segments was observed for the learners who received discrimination training only.

Perception of intraphonemic differences by phoneticians, musicians, and inexperienced listeners.
Several studies have shown that extensive training with synthetic speech sounds can result in substantial improvements in listeners' perception of intraphonemic differences. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of listening experience on the perception of intraphonemic differences in the absence of specific training with the synthetic speech sounds being tested. Phone...

Learning nonnative speech contrasts in adulthood has proven difficult. Standard training methods have achieved moderate effects using explicit instructions and performance feedback. In this study, the authors question preexisting assumptions by demonstrating a superiority of implicit training procedures. They trained 3 groups of Greek adults on a difficult Hindi contrast (a) explicitly, with fe...

متن کاملLearning Auditory Space: Generalization and Long-Term Effects
BACKGROUND Previous findings have shown that humans can learn to localize with altered auditory space cues. Here we analyze such learning processes and their effects up to one month on both localization accuracy and sound externalization. Subjects were trained and retested, focusing on the effects of stimulus type in learning, stimulus type in localization, stimulus position, previous experienc...
متن کاملPerceptual learning evidence for tuning to spectrotemporal modulation in the human auditory system.
Natural sounds are characterized by complex patterns of sound intensity distributed across both frequency (spectral modulation) and time (temporal modulation). Perception of these patterns has been proposed to depend on a bank of modulation filters, each tuned to a unique combination of a spectral and a temporal modulation frequency. There is considerable physiological evidence for such combine...
